Bedrock Integration

The Teams Bot uses Amazon Bedrock’s Converse API — not the Messages API or raw InvokeModel. The Converse API natively supports Claude’s tool-use (function calling) mode, which is the correct way to give Claude structured tools.

Tools are defined as JSON objects matching the Bedrock Converse API schema. Each tool has a name, description, and input schema:

The process_message() function in agent.py handles the full tool-use loop:

1. Send user message + tool definitions to Claude
2. Claude responds with either:
a. A text response → return it to the user (done)
b. A toolUse request → execute the tool, send result back
3. Repeat up to 5 rounds (prevents infinite loops)

The system prompt sets Claude’s behavior. It’s designed to be concise and actionable:

Security: Guardrails Are Not in the Prompt

The system prompt tells Claude about the draft-only rule, but the actual enforcement is in Python code. This is critical:

  • Prompt-based guardrails can be bypassed by prompt injection
  • Code-based guardrails cannot — they’re enforced at the executor layer

Even if Claude hallucinates a --status published flag, the executor ignores it.
